Touring Band Special (including lodging!!!) - Click here for details
  Located in Atlanta, GA (Cabbagetown/Reynoldstown).
Zero Return is a primarily analog recording studio (digital available if required), providing an affordable high quality recording environment.

Rooms

The main features of Zero Return are our large live room, with high ceilings and hardwood floors (great for drums, and all other acoustic instruments), our Neve console, and our growing collection of tube/vintage microphones, pre-amps, compressors, and outboard equipment (see full list below).

We also have several smaller dead rooms, one large enough for a full drum kit, and several for vocals, and single instrument isolation.

Our control room interior was designed in part by Wes Lachot, known for his designs found at Chase Park Transductions (Athens, GA), Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium studio in North Carolina, among others.

We have a small kitchenette, with stove, sink, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, etc
We have a full bath with shower, and a room with TV/VCR/DVD and sofas, for those times you want to get away from the recording process (those endless vocal overdubs!!)
Modest sleeping accommodations are available for out of town artists (several fold out futons), although we advise you bring your own bedding (sleeping bags).

Location

Zero Return is located in Cabbagetown in Atlanta, GA. We are about 1.5 miles from Little 5 Points, and about 2 miles from East Atlanta. Several clubs, bars, and restaurants are within 2 miles of the studio.
The 97 Estoria Restaurant (old Cabbage town Grille) (full bar and restaurant) is within walking distance, and delivery arrangements have been made with several downtown Atlanta restaurants.
Several options for vegan and vegetarians are available.

    Rates

Ok..so what is up with studios not just telling you what their prices are?

Well , here it is... our pricing...
We have come up with what we consider to be a very fair rate, and we charge these rate across the board.
No discounts 'cause you're super cool, no increased rates because your not with the hip crowd...

One set of rates...PUBLISHED... for everyone, all the time. ...that's easy, isn't it?

The base rate is $400.00 per day, plus tape. This is for 16 track 2" recording at 15ips.
    Note: This INCLUDES an engineer
Add $15.00 per day for 24 track
Add $15.00 per day for 30ips.

Want know how to spend HALF THE MONEY on your recording?...BE WELL REHEARSED!
Pardon my rant...but so many bands complain about how much studio time costs, but then arrive at the studio without being ready. Playing each song 100 times to get the performance you want takes time, do the math. Yes, it is quite fun to experiment in the studio, and we would love nothing more than to have you here twice as long, but let's face it, most budgets do not allow for this. If you want to reduce the cost of recording, reduce the time in studio... be ready!

How many tracks do you need?, and at what speed?
    This all depends...
In regards to the number of tracks, this depends on how many instruments you have, how many vocal tracks you will have, and a few other factors. Feel free to email us to discuss what will work well for your project.
We feel 16 track sounds a tiny bit better..so if you don't need the extra tracks, we recommend 16 track.

    IPS ? - what's that?
This refers to the speed of the tape. IPS stands for Inches Per Second. The higher the speed, the higher the fidelity (to a point). Many people feel that 30 IPS is the best standard recording speed, although 15ips sounds great for many applications. Keep in mind, that at 30ips , you will need twice as much tape for the same amount of music. That may be a consideration for a project on a budget. 2 Inch tape costs about $160.00 per 2500' reel. At 15ips, this will get you just about 30 minutes of recording time. At 30ips the same amount of tape will only get about 15 minutes of recording time. Tape speed, and related tape costs are one thing to look at depending on the type of recording and budget you are working with. Feel free to email us if you would like to discuss the most appropriate speed, and tracks for your project at :

    Tape Costs
We can provide tape for you at the following rates:
  • $160.00 per reel : 2500' x 2" Quantegy GP9 (30 minutes of recording at 15ips, and 15 minutes at 30ips)
  • $50.00 per reel : 2500' x 1/2" Quantegy GP9 (same recording time as above)
  • $30.00 per reel : 2500' x 1/4" Quantegy GP9 (same recording time as above)
You can also purchase tape on your own, and bring it to the session. Just make sure you get Quantegy GP9 (if not..please call us in advance to make sure we re-calibrate prior to your session). Tape is available at Tape Warehouse in Atlanta (770) 458-1679, Guitar Centers, many online tape stores, and many other places... check your local shops for prices.
